If the first month of 2020 was filled with news of a potential war in Iran, then the second has been swamped by panic regarding the 2019 Novel Coronavirus. In this swarm of information, it can be difficult to decipher what is accurate, and what is fear-mongering.

As the official numbers from the Chinese government can be difficult to find, secondary sources reporting these numbers are often used instead. A great place to find the latest information regarding the virus is the BNO News agency.

Based out of the Netherlands, they have no significant right or left bias and their information is well presented. From their numbers, there are over 37 000 infected in China, with more than 800 deaths.

While these numbers may be alarming on their own, it is important to remember that these are the numbers provided by the Chinese government, which has downplayed the severity of situations like this one before.
Indeed, a research group at the Imperial College of London, the Abdul Latif Jameel Institute for Disease and Emergency Analytics, has found some very different information regarding the outbreak. According to Professor Neil Ferguson, only about 10% of cases in China and a quarter of international cases are being diagnosed. Moreover, Neil states that, according to their research, there are about 50 000 new infections every day in mainland China.

This may seem terrifying, but remember, nCoV has a mortality rate of only around 2%, and is especially dangerous only to individuals with weakened immune systems. So for us here at John Abbott, staying sanitary will keep us perfectly safe.
