You might have heard this word mentioned in class; maybe you read it on a poster. You probably didn’t pay much attention though, did you? Well, here is everything you need to know about the four possible certificates you can obtain while completing your DEC. The four certificates are: Environmental Studies, Aboriginal Studies, Peace and Social Justice Studies and, last but not least, Women’s Studies and Gender Relations. Any student can apply for any of these certificates, no matter your gender or your program. What you do is simple. First, you fill out a short form. Then, each certificate offers a list of courses that apply to them and you must complete 6 of them over the course of your DEC. Many of the courses are program directed, but a generous number of courses for the certificates can be found in any general education courses, making it easy for anybody to apply! The last thing you must do, is dedicate a project in one of those courses to the theme of your certificate. For example, if following a video production class, you can make a film about a current environmental issue. Completing a certificate looks great on applications to universities or jobs, and gives you extra knowledge on subjects that might be blurry to others. The course lists and the contact information for each certificate are all available on the John Abbott Website, under Academics.
