Even though only a month has passed in 2017, the rest of the year promises to be prosperous in the fields of science and technology. Each year, scientists and researchers make incredible breakthroughs, either improving our lives and environment, or simply bringing us pleasure. Two innovations are expected to change 2017: a cure against HIV, and Biodegradable shoes.

A Cure Against HIV/AIDS

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) affects the immune system of more than 36 million people globally. Over time, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which further affects the immune system as the body cannot defend itself from life-threatening infections and diseases.

On the bright side, SAV001, a new vaccine that utilizes a safe and dead version of the HIV virus, could help fight HIV/AIDS by helping the immune system produce antibodies to fight against the virus.

It is set for clinical trials this coming fall and, after positive Phase I results, it could be quite promising.

Biodegradable Shoes

A typical pair of running shoes goes through a lot in its short life before it becomes worn out and finally ends up in the trash. However, Adidas is offering a more eco-friendly option with the first totally biodegradable sneakers, the Adidas Futurecraft Biofabric.

They will be made of a material called Biosteel (a fiber resembling spider silk made from natural processes), which makes them biodegradable.

Purchasing these shoes will be a little step in helping the environment, since they can be composted instead of ending up in a land field. The Adidas Futurecraft Biofabric will be on the market sometime during the spring.

There are so many other innovations worth mentioning and many to be discovered in the future, so the sky is the limit for science and technology!
