Change isn’t a decision, change is a necessity

Recently we were asked to vote via Omnivox on whether or not the school should close down in order to show support for the climate change protest occurring on Friday, September 27th.

Personally, I do not believe that this strike should have been an optional one. In all our classes, teachers instill knowledge in us regarding the climate crisis and what is happening.Yet we are rarely told what to do or how to create the change we long for. The school had an opportunity to direct us and guide us and yet they decided to leave the decision in our hands. We are young, we are scared and we are uncertain of what the future holds, or if we even have a future ahead of us

Although I don’t believe educators and news outlets are trying to hold younger generations responsible for the climate crisis, I think that the fear tactic being used are not helpful in creating a solution to this devastating problem. And we need solutions, no matter how small.

We need leaders that offer the opportunity for a sustainable tomorrow. Though our generation is often scrutinized for our apparent laziness and obsession with technology, I believe that we are the future and that we are capable of creating the change we would like to see in the world. We just need to be treated like it.
