The Parkland Florida school shooting last Wednesday is now known as the ninth-deadliest shooting in modern US history. Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old shooter, former student of Stoneman Douglas High School, used a 223-caliber AR-15 rifle, and shot students and teachers on two floors at the high school, then dropped his gun on the third floor. He descended the stairs and ran outside, blending in with the students running for their lives.
Judge Kim Theresa Mollica charged him the day after with 17 counts of premeditated murder. The Broward County public defender representing Cruz, Howard Finkelstein, said that he will plead guilty if the death penalty will be withdrawn from discussion. However, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is certain that prosecutors will go for the death penalty.
Students expressed their grief and anger as by urging actions to be taken on gun control. Emma Gonzalez, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, delivered a speech at an anti-gun rally in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She directly sent a message to President Trump and all the politicians who receive donations from the NRA. “Shame on you”, she said. She also recalled last year’s incident, in February of 2017, when “President trump repealed an Obama-Era regulation that would have made it easier to block the sale of firearms to people with certain mental illnesses.
Gonzalez finished her emotional speech while calling “BS” to all the politicians who argue that nothing could’ve been done to prevent such an incident and those who say that teens are too immature to understand the government’s functionality.
