Variety Show: Time Travelling Talent

This year’s annual Variety Show was held Thursday April 12th. With the theme of “Back to the Variety Show”, the performances brought us back and forth through time, going from the 1800s to the present and back again.

The show opened with a very strong performance, a pop song that had everybody singing along. However, the pace of the rest of the songs, even though they were well known, like Fly Me to the Moon or La Vie en Rose, was so much slower. It would have been nice to have more up-beat songs.

The MCs did an incredible job. They equally shared the spotlight and they didn’t seem nervous. When something unexpected happened, they went along with it, and even if they made little mistakes, it was okay, because they brushed them aside swiftly and it showed that they were having fun.

Before the show even started, I was worried about whether the theme would be well represented or not. The introduction was great; the video montage of the MCs really set the tone for the show. However, the first half lacked a few references to the theme. The performances would go from the 1990’s to the 1940’s and back to the 1980’s, but the transitions in between had little to do with going through time. Although, the second half did not disappoint. The references were there, bringing us even further in the past, all the way to the 1800s.

My evening was definitely not a waste of time. The performances were varied and well done, the finale was amazing, and the food was delicious! Hats off to all!
