Wednesday

Supernatural, comedy and a pinch of horror, Netflix’s TV show Wednesday stars actress Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, the rarely smiling, cold and emotionless-looking girl with dark hair, and pigtails. Viewers are dived deep into suspense, mystery and transcendent events, with the mastermind Tim Burton directing several episodes and serving as an executive producer.

The comedy horror is the latest spinoff of the classic, somewhat macabre Addams Family, created by cartoonist Charles Addams. The story follows Wednesday Addams, as a student at Nevermore Academy, private school for outcasts (such as werewolves, vampires and gorgons). She attempts to solve a series of recent nearby murders, while encountering new friends…and foes along the way. Wednesday is like a storm cloud while her roomie, Ennid (played by Emma Myers), is bright and cheerful. The contrast between these two is definitely a highlight of the Netflix show, and what’s more, the actresses themselves were spectacular in portraying their characters.
There are plenty of stunning visuals too in the show. In fact, the show was filmed across several locations in Romania. Did you know that Nevermore Academy exists in real life? The outside of the school was shot at Cantacuzino Castle, in the town of Bușteni. A team of experts then used CGI to build on top of the existing architecture to create the “kind of emo Hogwarts” as global film editor Phil de Semlyen describes it.
Noteworthy Wednesday quotes from the show include:
“I Find Social Media to be a Soul-Sucking Void of Meaningless Affirmation.”
“I’m not sure whose twisted idea it was to put hundreds of adolescents in underfunded schools run by people whose dreams were crushed years ago, but I admire the sadism.”
“If he breaks your heart, I’ll nail gun his.”
These sayings pack quite some pinch; after all, Wednesday was named after the nursery rhyme “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.”
