Service Spotlight: Health and Wellness Center
Here is an overview of the services we offer in the Health and Wellness Centre for students located in H-139.
Nurses: there are two part time nurses providing care Monday to Friday. Our biggest role is seeing students individually for health consultations. Students may have a question about an ongoing health issue (such as ‘I can’t sleep”) or a more immediate concern (“I think I’m pregnant” or “I have a fever”). We do lots in the sexual health domain (pregnancy testing, birth control prescribing, STI testing) but our practice is not limited to that. We pretty much see it all, running the gamete from ingrown toe nails, mental health concerns, “I want to be a vegetarian”, and substance use to chronic illnesses. We also run health education campaigns on campus such as Sexual Health Week and Drug and Alcohol Awareness.
Doctors: there are two family doctors that come on campus and offer medical clinics. Students can see them for prescriptions, for medical investigations, checkups and for ongoing medical care. Students need to provide their Medicare card and we accept the Desjardins insurance card for international students. Appointments generally are available within seven days but they do try to accommodate students living away from home more quickly.
Nutritionist: there is a nutritionist here one day a week. Common topics students see her for include general eating habits, concern for example, weight gain/loss, eating for working out/training, vegetarian eating, or a specific medical problem e.g. anemia or irritable bowel syndrome.
Students are often reassured to know that our services are confidential; we do not share information with other college members (including faculty), student’s friends or parents. The age of consent to medical care in Quebec is 14. For any of the above services student simply come to H-139 and see the receptionist about an appointment.
It would be our pleasure at the Health and Wellness Center to answer any questions you might have.
