Young convention is a SMASH

Montreal’s pop culture convention scene has begun. In the next few months, we will see a mass increase of cosplayers, nerds, geeks and members of the general public attending various convention centers throughout the city. These conventions get bigger every year, and with that there are more attendees and more corporate sponsors. Conventions such as Comic-Con and Otakuthon are a great time, but I personally miss the more intimate convention experience, where it feels like an event for fans, but also run by fans at the same time.
This is where GEEK-IT! comes in. A brand new convention was held in a small conference center near the old port of Montreal during the weekend of April 6th and 7th. This is their first year hosting this convention and I must say, for their first time, I think they really nailed it. Unfortunately I was only able to attend on the Saturday, but for the time I was there, I was thoroughly impressed with the organization; every event went off without a hitch. The entire hall was filled from front to back with thousands of attendees all having a great time; the vendors hall was busy and booming! I especially had a lot of fun trying my hand at a large handful of indie games that they had on display. If I were to make any suggestions, it would be to have a more diverse array of food and ATM machines in the hall itself.
Overall, the first edition of GEEK-IT! was a great success and I hope they can really grow in the coming years.
