Former ‘One Direction’ band member and pop soloist Liam Payne has passed away at the age of 31 years old in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A preliminary autopsy revealed the singer passed from “polytrauma” and “an internal and external haemorrhage” after a three-story fall from the balcony at his hotel.

Local officials showed up to the hotel room in Palermo after receiving a call on October 16th at 5 pm from staff, claiming “an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol” was causing disruptions on the premises. Hotel staff stressed the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that the man’s hotel room included a balcony which could potentially be dangerous considering his state. According to first responders who appeared on the scene, Payne’s body was unable to be resuscitated due to the severity of his injuries which included both internal and external bleeding. The hotel manager reported that Payne had been behaving erratically all night, “tearing the room apart.”

The hotel room where Payne had been staying during his trip was discovered to be in disarray following the events of Wednesday. Besides narcotics and alcohol, many over-the-counter medications, such as Clorazepam, were found at the scene. Additionally, pieces of aluminum foil, energy supplements, a lighter, a passport, and a notebook were also found in the hotel room. Several items had also been broken or damaged, including a television set.

The local prosecutor’s office claims it is highly likely the singer was going through a manic episode due to drug use. Narcotics and alcohol were both present at the scene. Officials are still trying to confirm whether the fall was intentional or not. However, forensic experts found that a total of 25 injuries were “compatible with those produced by a fall from height” and that no defensive injuries were found.

Payne had been visiting Argentina with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, who had left the country on October 14th by herself. He had attended the concert of his former bandmate Niall Horan approximately two weeks before his death. In the hours before his passing, he had posted to Snapchat that he had been “happy to get some time away”. His final post was a picture of him and his girlfriend from 2023. In the days leading up to his death, Payne had been in the midst of a legal battle with his ex-girlfriend Maya Henry, who had sent a cease and desist letter to Payne concerning his attempts to contact her against her will.

Many tributes for the late singer have rolled in. Former bandmates Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson shared emotional Instagram posts discussing their devastation over Payne’s death and their memories together. One Direction’s joint Instagram account also released a statement on behalf of the remaining 4 members of the band, along with Simon Cowell, expressing their pain and condolences over the situation. Payne’s family has also released a heartfelt statement, requesting space and time to heal.
