“Super Superhero”

It seems that Vocaloids and Vocaloid music have been growing in popularity recently, especially after Hatsune Miku’s inclusion in Fortnite as a skin and three songs featuring the vocal synth’s voice. For those who are unfamiliar with Vocaloids, they are characters linked to specific voice synthesizer voicebanks. The most popular among them is Hatsune Miku.

With all that preamble out of the way, Super Superhero is the latest release of prolific vocaloid producer Pinocchio-P. The song is a catchy pop track with a bright sound and clean production, with many samples and electric, punchy drums. The song itself centers on a protagonist, the titular “super” superhero, someone who has reached the summit, perhaps of heroism, and has now forgotten what it was like to be at the bottom. The song is written in first-person perspective, so there are actually two characters in this story. The narrator criticizes the hero’s actions, personality and following. The song is made up of these criticisms, with many sarcastic phrases like “You’re super, you’re awesome, going easy on your own sins” and aggressive questions like, “What’s left after you’ve achieved everything?”.

With the phrase “Superhero or DIE, what?” being repeated throughout the song, it is clear that the phrase “you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” is what our super superhero lives by, choosing the latter option. In a deeper sense, this song could be either about Pinocchio-P’s fears about becoming too successful or becoming some other producer.

Though no specific person is mentioned, there is a reference to the song World Is Mine to describe a mindset/personality type. All in all, Pinocchio-P’s latest release is a great listen and an interesting story.
