Recently, on March 2nd, the 97th Academy Awards ceremony took place to highlight some of the most memorable films of 2024.
Overseen by host and comedian Conan O’Brien, Hollywood’s biggest night this year was marked by Sean Baker’s indie production, Anora, who snatched 5 Oscars wins, including Best Picture, Best Actress (Mikey Madison’s impressive feat at only 25 years of age!), Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, four out of the event’s five major categories.
The World Record for the longest Academy speech also just got broken by actor Adrien Brody who gave a five minute forty speech upon receiving his Best Leading Actor award for his role in The Brutalist. Meanwhile, Best Adapted Screenplay was won by Edward Berger’s Conclave, a thrilling political film about the Pope election. Best Supporting Actor and Actress were handed respectively to Kieran Culkin (for playing Benji in A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldaña (for playing Rita in Emilia Pérez).
A few other titles who got a taste of the little golden statuette include Wicked (for Best Costume Design), No Other Land (for Best Documentary Feature Film), The Substance (for Makeup & Hairstyling), and Flow, who bagged Best Animated Feature Film over audience favourite The Wild Robot.
Of course, these are only a few of the 24 categories that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences proudly presents annually. Not to mention, there are many great films outside of the Academy’s scope of winners and nominees.
As filmmaker Martin Scorsese once said, “Film is a powerful medium. It can make you cry, it can make you laugh, it can make you think,” cinema is a great form of art; it is a powerful way to convey different things. And so, on an ending note, go watch movies, everyone!!
