Poppy (Moriah Rose Pereira) is a 29-year-old American singer and internet personality who gained fame through her surreal YouTube videos, starting in 2011. She adopted a robotic, uncanny valley-like behaviour which quickly attracted a following. In 2015, she began a music career with Poppy.computer in 2017, a bubblegum pop with experimental sound.

Her music began to evolve with 2019’s Am I a Girl?, which integrated elements of rock and metal, and then 2020’s I Disagree, which combined the aforementioned metal with pop and electronic elements. This latter album received critical praise and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. In Poppy’s work, identity, fame, and technology are tropes that show the artificiality of contemporary popular culture.

As an artist, she has continually reinvented herself, blurring the lines between pop, experimental, and metal genres, and remains the peculiar figure in the music world well-known for her far-out sound and conceptual persona. Poppy’s rise to fame earlier on came hand in hand with working closely with producer and filmmaker Titanic Sinclair (Corey Mixter). Sinclair played a huge part in shaping Poppy’s enigmatic and avant-garde persona, directing many of her early YouTube videos and music videos. The two started collaborating in 2014 and Sinclair helped create Poppy’s robotic doll-like persona combined with absurd and often unsettling content.

Their collaboration culminated with the first musical releases of Poppy, including Poppy.computer, to which Sinclair was heavily involved with, musically and visually. However, their partnership publicly ended in 2019. Poppy announced their split during the promotion of her album Am I a Girl?, with some suggesting that it was due to creative differences. The breakup also marked a shift in sound and image for Poppy, who began to take more control over her music and visual direction.

The ending of this relationship saw Poppy’s work become more experimental and aggressive, particularly with the release of her 2020 album I Disagree.

From January 22nd until May 20th 2025, Poppy will be going on tour. She will be passing by Montreal on March 29. A user named alex on Ticketmaster left a positive review for a previous Poppy concert: “I love Poppy, she’s so good live, she looked awesome, her band was awesome, visuals were engaging. The sound was pretty overwhelming and probably could have been altered to fit the venue if that makes sense? So happy I got to catch her last show on the tour.” Get your tickets before it’s too late!
