Lesson in Truth

How funny it is. To laugh with the people who have said the most terrible thing about you. And they still think that you don’t know. They joke, they smile, they speak as if their cruelty was never carved into the space between you, as if time and silence had erased the weight of what they said.
And so you laugh too, not because you’ve forgotten, not because you forgive, but because there is something almost poetic in letting them believe their own illusion. They get to spread rumours until they have to face you. In fact, they don’t. They can’t. And in reality, it never mattered. To think that these people are the future of our society scares me. Their ability to shape reality with lies reveals how fragile truth can be when it’s up against manipulation.
Move on. Like you never knew them. Because, in reality, you never did. They were never more than the stories they told about themselves, the masks they wore to make you forget that truth. Many learn that lesson way later in life, but you see, people who build themselves up by tearing others down can only live in the shadows they create. And when the light shines on you, you’ll find that their cruelty never truly touched you. It was always their own insecurities they were projecting. So laugh, yes, but with the knowledge that your peace is theirs to seek, and that they’ll never find it in you.
