Last Wednesday, the first meeting of John Abbott College’s newest club took place: The Law and Debate Club.
After participating in McGill Law’s annual mock trial tournament, two second year science students, Daniel Makhlin and Yassine Meliani, took the initiative to found a club at Abbott for students interested in pursuing a career in law, or simply learning about the legal field. They hope it will give a place for like-minded students to discuss law and current events, as well as organizing intercollegiate mock trial competitions. The club will also invite John Abbott alumni who have pursued careers in the legal field as guest speakers.
As challenging as starting a new club is with the constraint of a global pandemic, the first meeting was a great start to this project, bringing together about 20 likeminded students, all hoping to learn about the new club. With a motivated group of founding members and exciting events on the horizon, it seems that the new Law and Debate club has quite a lot to bring to John Abbott’s student life. Meetings will be held every week on Wednesdays.
